Autumn Tips and Ideas

We are now into Autumn, hanging baskets and containers are nearing their end, now is the time to think of your winter baskets.

Just a few ideas for your baskets, as an alternative to liners or moss for the winter try using conifer clippings they look good and remain a lush green.

Planting :- use a good quality compost  this does make a difference, no need for water retention granules or slow release fertiliser. For the centre / back piece try using Euonymus or any other evergreen shrub (small shrub liner 9cm pot), Heather, Dwarf Conifer or ornamental Cabbage (Kale) infill with hardy alpines :- Sedum, Acena, Thymes, Cineria, Ivy, Ajuga and Saxifrage to name but a few and pansies, make sure they are the winter flowering type i.e. Ultima, Universal, challenge etc. Viola Avalanche, Primulas, Dianthus and a few spring flowering bulbs (dwarf). There is no need to water baskets everyday, just check the weight of them by lifting slightly you will soon tell if they require watering by the weight of them.

You can also use flower bags filled with pansies, trailing Alpines, Ivy Primulas etc.

Now is the time to sort out your more delicate plants that will not survive the winter. Before the frosts arrive they will need to be placed somewhere frost free i.e.. conservatory, greenhouse etc.

Tidy up your garden, remove all dead bedding plants and do any pruning that is required, tie up any climbers and add support to any plants that require it. During the autumn/winter months take stock of your garden, do you have colour throughout the seasons, incorporate some colour with autumn/winter flowering shrubs, this is the ideal time to plant shrubs while the ground is still warm.
